After Anna Jarvis' effective advancement of Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia, the primary recognition of a "Father's Day" was hung on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church.[1] Grace Golden Clayton was grieving the loss of her dad, when in December 1907, the Monongah Mining Disaster in adjacent Monongah killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers, leaving around a thousand orphan youngsters. Clayton proposed that her minister Robert Thomas Webb respect every one of those fathers.

Clayton's occasion did not have repercussions outside Fairmont for a few reasons, among them: the city was overpowered by different occasions, the festival was never advanced outside the town itself and no announcement of it was made by the city board. Likewise, two occasions eclipsed this occasion: the festival of Independence Day July 4, 1908, with 12,000 chaperons and a few shows including a hot air swell occasion, which assumed control over the features in the next days, and the passing of a 16-year-old young lady on July 4.
